### What is Population Builder?

Population Builder is a tool for defining, exploring, and activating member populations across Leap. A population is a group of members who share something in common, for example "diabetics attributed to Dr. Smith who haven't had an appointment in 6 months and are high risk." Population Builder lets you pull that group together from across all your data domains like claims, encounters, rosters, appointments and more, in one place, without needing to know SQL or how the data is structured behind the scenes.

### Why would you use it?

Use Population Builder to create populations, explore your data, and answer questions like "how many members have X." You can also build a population that can be used in different parts in Leap:

* **Patient filtering:** filter patients for a specific population in Panel Patients on provider's profiles
* **Patient attribution:** use a population as an included population when setting up panels
* **Analytics:** use the population in other analytics and reporting
* **Campaigns and outreach:** reach the right members directly through marketing

### How to use it?

Population Builder is built for everyone, with varying levels of comfort with data, SQL, and how data systems are structured.

* **Business user:** explore populations and blocks that already exist, and use them as a base to build your own. The Include/Exclude structure is easy to use and lets you modify rules. If you are building from scratch, type what you're looking for in the field picker and choose the top result.
* **Semi-technical:** build populations and blocks from scratch, go a deeper into data domains, and work through more complex questions to build populations.
* **Analyst:** build complex, multi-domain logic, and create reusable blocks and populations for others to use. You can also check the SQL to confirm the population you built is answering the questions correctly.
